The transition to the Chipmunk room hasn't been quite as smooth as we hoped. Daddy and I both brought him in yesterday. It's heartbreaking to leave when he's crying, especially after you had to pry him off your leg. The teachers say he does great for the rest of the day.
He wore one of Mommy's favorite shirts today and came home covered in fingerpaint. I guess we need to remind the teachers that he has a smock to wear during art projects. Tough adjustments all around...

Alvin, Simon, Theodore!
Colin is no longer a Chick! At daycare, kids between 12 and 18 months are in the Chicks classroom. A new semester starts tomorrow and Colin will be entering the Chipmunks room (18 to 24 months). The new room will have 9 kids (instead of 6) and 3 teachers (instead of 2). Otherwise, the schedule will be pretty much the same. I hope he adjusts well to the new teachers and 6 new kids (two other kids from his class are moving up with him).I guess he'll want a hula hoop now...

Sunday in the Park with Colin
We like a lot of things about our neighborhood, but one of the best things is that we have two city parks within walking distance of our house. Our favorite is what we call the Mattie Park. The park, which was finished earlier this summer, is named in memory of Mattie Stepanek (who lived in our neigborhood until he passed
away in 2004) and has an accessible playground with equipment for big and little kids. (It also has Rockville's first dog park, but we haven't had a chance to try that out yet.)Since today was one of those rare August days in the 70s, we took a trip to the Mattie Park. Colin's favorite thing is the slides.
We learned two things from what other parents in the park were telling their kids today.
1. "You can't climb up the slides."

2. "It's too dangerous to slide head first."

Oops, I guess we didn't learn our lessons very well!
Interestingly, he hates the swings. The kid has no fear, but he'll scream his head off if you dare put him in a swing.

Check, please
I guess Colin has decided that high chairs are for babies and he's a big boy now. Tonight, he enjoyed his fabulous waffle dinner (hey, Mommy and Daddy had breakfast for dinner too) at the kitchen table. He's entered an uber picky stage, so we're willing to try almost anything that encourages him to eat. Unfortunately, we spent most of dinner asking him to sit down instead of standing in the chair.

18-Month Stats
Colin had his 18-month appointment today. He weighs 27 pounds 12 ounces and is 33 inches tall (both in the 75th percentile). He lost 4 ounces since May, but grew almost two inches! His head is still in the 90th percentile. I guess he's got a big brain growing in there. In fact, today he showed us where his nose, belly and feet are.The doctor said he should have a vocabulary of 6 to 10 words. So far, Colin says: Dada (Daddy), Ada (Mommy), Dog (um, dog), Ma (more), Rora (Rory, our dog), La La (Bella, our cat, and Ty, our other cat), and Ball (you guessed it). He says a couple of other things, including something that sounds like "go go," but we haven't figured out what those mean yet. Stupid parents...
